The fifteenth National Television Awards, celebrating the actors, actresses, and television series of 2009, was broadcast on ITV One earlier tonight. Doctor Who was nominated in the Best Drama category, alongside BBC One's hospital drama, Casualty, ITV One's police drama, The Bill, and Channel 4's adult drama, Shameless, but despite the challenging opposition, Doctor Who won the award for the fifth year running. David Tennant had been nominated in the Outstanding Drama Performance category for his portrayal in Doctor Who as The Tenth Doctor, facing opposition from David Jason, David Threlfall, and Philip Glenister, and won, making it a successful night for Doctor Who.
