David Tennant recently returned to Cardiff to start work on the first Doctor Who 2009 special, Planet of the Dead. BBC Books have now revealed the official synopses and some details for the upcoming Torchwood Encyclopedia and the three new Torchwood novels which will be released on the fifteenth of October. The BBC today issued a press release regarding the upcoming Doctor Who special episode, Planet of the Dead. The press release confirms that Michelle Ryan and Lee Evans will star in the episode and that Noma Dumezweni will return as Captain Magambo who was previously seen in the series four episode, Turn Left. Michelle Ryan has been cast in the first Doctor Who 2009 special, Planet of the Dead. She was at first rumoured to be appearing in the fifth series of Doctor Who but was yesterday spotted filming Planet of the Dead in Cardiff with David Tennant. The actress who has previously starred in Eastenders will reportedly play a character called Lady Christina De Souza who joins with The Doctor and takes a bus trip into danger. There are also rumours that Lee Evans, a popular British comedian and actor, will be appearing as a character named Malcolm in the special. Planet of the Dead will be broadcast on BBC One and on the BBC HD channel this Spring, and the latest news regarding the Doctor Who special will be posted when released.
Doctor Who has been nominated for it's visual effects at the seventh annual Visual Effects Society Awards. It has been nominated in the 'Outstanding Visual Effects in a Broadcast Miniseries, Movie or Special' category for The Cyberking effects in the 2008 Christmas special, The Next Doctor. Doctor Who has also been nominated in the 'Outstanding Matte Paintings in a Broadcast Program or Commercial' category for the series four episode, Silence in the Library. Tonight, Catherine Tate who starred as Donna Noble in the fourth series of Doctor Who will be guest hosting The Sunday Night Project. She will be taking part in the show's usual activities with Alan Carr and Justin Lee Collins, and a Doctor Who comedy sketch. Other Doctor Who stars such David Tennant, Billie Piper, and John Barrowman have also presented the show, which was called The Friday Night Project at the time. It should be noted that the show features adult humour and themes so is not suitable for children who do not have parental permission. The Sunday Night Project, hosted by Catherine Tate, will be be aired tonight at 10pm on Channel4.

The first issue of the magazine, collecting every episode of Doctor Who from Rose to Journey's End, will be released tomorrow, coming with a free DVD, featuring the episodes Rose and The End of the World. Titan Magazines have revealed that John Barrowman who plays Jack Harkness in Doctor Who and Torchwood will be writing a comic strip with his sister, Carole, for Torchwood Magazine. The story, entitled Captain Jack and the Selkie, sees Jack Harkness investigating disappearances on a Scottish island. Torchwood Magazine comics editor Martin Eden, said:

BARB, the Broadcasters Audience Research Board, have now revealed the ratings for programmes that have been broadcast over the Christmas period. The ratings reveal that the recently aired Doctor Who Christmas special, The Next Doctor, was watched by 13.1 million people. These ratings make Doctor Who the fifth most watched programme of last year and the second most watched programme of Christmas Day 2008, losing out to the new Wallace and Gromit film which was watched by 16.15 million.
